The National Assembly of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has granted the power to discuss the formation of a coalition in the upcoming presidential election to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
MDP National Assembly passed the resolution unanimously at a meeting held at Izzuddin School. The National Assembly was not attended by Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who was defeated in the MDP presidential primary, and his supporters.
MDP National Assembly also gave President Solih the authority to form a coalition in 2018. He won the election with a multi-party coalition with Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP), and the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).
No single political party has won 50% of the votes needed to secure the presidency without forming a coalition since the current constitution came into effect in 2008.
