Gov’t to begin development of 61 police stations

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated that the development of 61 police stations will begin in April.

Speaking at the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister Imran said that the police stations will be built this year as part of the efforts to stop crime in the atolls and establish safe communities. He also said that the police station to be established in Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, will be conducted under the agreement with India-based ABL Indira Projects JV with loan assistance from the EXIM Bank of India. He said that the design work has been completed and the Ministry of Finance has been sent the request to pay the advance payment.

Additionally, Minister Imran said the development of the police station in Thoddoo is part of the project to build 61 police stations across the country. He assured that fieldwork for the development of all stations will begin in April and that construction will be completed for some of the stations this year.

Furthermore, Minister Imran said the police stations will be used for patrols, quick response and reporting, and neighbourhood policing, adding that each station will have an investigative officer. He also said that more officers will be stationed at existing stations and that more officers, vehicles, and resources will be transferred to stop crime in high-population areas in Addu City this year.
