Discussions ongoing for resort development in 15 islands

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that discussions are ongoing to resume work in 15 islands that were leased for resort development.

Responding to questions at the Parliament, Minister Mausoom expressed concern over the lack of progress in many islands that were leased for resort development. He said that projects have been stalled in 83 islands, which is a point of concern for stakeholders in the tourism industry.

However, Minister Mausoom said discussions are ongoing to resume the projects in 15 islands. He also detailed the efforts being made to assist investors by forgiving fines and reducing lease payments. He said that leaving the islands undeveloped is a loss for the investors as well and urged them to work with the ministry to find solutions.

Additionally, Minister Mausoom said the equipment and resources needed for resort development are brought in from China. As such, he expects the projects to progress quickly as China has opened its borders.
