Hulhumale’ Hospital holds eye camp with Chinese doctors

Hulhumale’ Hospital has stated that 179 patients have been treated so far in the camp conducted jointly by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre of China.

The camp is being conducted in collaboration with the Chinese Ophthalmic Centre after a three-year hiatus. The centre conducts special camps for eye treatment every year. A total of four doctors and three nurses from China participated in the camp. China's Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre and Hulhumale' Hospital have held a camp for various eye treatments since February 4 with a total of 179 patients receiving various eye treatments at the camp.

Hulhumale' Hospital stated that 52 individuals were tested for referral or vision problems at the camp, 17 patients were treated for lacrimal duct probing and syringing, two patients underwent eye laser surgery, and 83 patients underwent tonometry or intraocular pressure testing. In addition, optical coherence tomography, a test of the retina, was performed on 85 people, 12 patients underwent visual field tests, 17 patients underwent biometry tests, and 19 patients underwent cataract surgery, according to Hulhumale' Hospital.

Teams of Chinese doctors visited the Maldives in 2015, 2017 and 2019 to conduct similar eye camps. Under an agreement between both countries, a clinic has also been established with Chinese assistance to expand eye care in the Maldives. China will donate some eye care equipment to the hospital during the ceremony.
