Maldives donates one million tuna cans to Türkiye and Syria

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that the government of the Maldives would donate Türkiye and Syria with in-kind assistance of one million cans of tuna to assist in the efforts to provide humanitarian and relief aid to those displaced by the devastating earthquakes that struck the region on February 6.

Speaking about the donation, the Spokesperson at the President’s Office Miuvaan Mohamed said has sent messages conveying his condolences to the leaders of both countries. He also said President Solih decided to send one million cans of tuna to both countries as a symbolic gesture from the Maldivian people towards the relief efforts. As such, he said 500,000 tuna cans will be sent to both Türkiye and Syria.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid said the donation is a demonstration of solidarity with the people of Türkiye and Syria. He said the Maldives hopes the small contribution will bring a sense of comfort and support to those affected.
