STELCO to start developing 100MW power plant within two months

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed that preparations are underway for the construction of the 100MW power plant in Hulhumale' within the next two months as part of the Sixth Power Project.

Speaking at a press conference, Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said the latest preparations are underway to start the project, adding the model to finance the project has been prepared and sent for approval. The power plant developed under the Fifth Power Project has a capacity of 50MW and is now providing electricity to Phase I and Phase II in Hulhumale'. In addition, STELCO has utilised the old power plant located in Hulhumale' and has increased its capacity to 30MW. So far, nearly 100MW of generators have been installed to supply electricity to the Greater Male' Region.

The Sixth Power Project will be the largest powerhouse project to be conducted in the Maldives. STELCO announced the new project last year. The project will be carried out on the land adjacent to the Fifth Power Project developed by STELCO in Hulhumale' Phase I. STELCO has expressed confidence that the new power project will solve any issues in providing electricity to the growing demand in the Greater Male' Region.
