Maldives and Sri Lanka sign agreement on border security

The Maldives and Sri Lanka have signed an agreement on border security. The agreement was signed during the ongoing visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid to Sri Lanka to attend the 75th Independence Day celebrations.

The agreement was signed by the Immigration Controller of the Maldives Mohamed Ahsan Hussain and the Controller General of the Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka Harsha Ilukpitiya. The agreement will provide a framework to enhance and strengthen institutional cooperation on immigration-related matters between both organisations. The agreement will pave way for greater institutional cooperation between the two countries on matters related to border security.

It is the first such accord signed by the Maldives with an overseas border agency to strengthen institutional cooperation.
