STELCO to reduce price of electricity for public establishments

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed that it will be reducing the price of electricity for public establishments.

At a press conference, Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said STELCO is in discussions to include a public category to the electricity tariffs to reduce the cost of electricity for establishments that provide a public service. He said these establishments are billed under commercial tariffs, which carries a higher price for electricity than for households. He noted that this results in establishments that do not generate revenue having to pay a high cost for electricity.

As such, Managing Director Shareef said STELCO has decided to reduce the price of electricity for establishments that provide a public service and are not generating revenue by introducing a special tariff category. He said that STELCO is holding discussions with the Utility Regulatory Authority and Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology. He added that introducing the public category would reduce the cost of powering mosques and football grounds, which are currently paying for electricity at the same rate as shops, cafés, restaurants, and guesthouses.
