Maldives condemns burning of Holy Quran in Denmark

The government of the Maldives has strongly condemned the abhorrent act of desecration of the Holy Quran in Copenhagen, Denmark carried out by Rasmus Paludan, leader of the far-right political party Stram Kurs.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the recurrence of this deeply despicable and disrespectful act simply cannot be conflated with freedom of speech, which hurts the religious sentiments of millions of Muslims across the world. The ministry reiterates that these appalling acts of islamophobia undermine all efforts to uphold the values of tolerance and increase the rise of islamophobia around the world and pose a greater threat to the principles of peace, unity, and co-existence.

The Maldives recently voiced out condemning the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden by Paludan. Meanwhile, Muslims around the world have erupted in anger and alarm after Sweden allowed Rasmus Paludan to burn a copy of the Holy Quran in front of the Turkish embassy building in Stockholm.

Danish-Swedish far-right politician and anti-Islam activist Rasmus Paludan staged a protest outside the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen, burning another copy of the Holy Quran. Paludan vows to stage weekly actions involving the Quran until Turkey approves Sweden’s NATO membership.
