Contract signed to develop new hospital in Thulhaadhoo

Ministry of Health has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the construction of a new 30-bed hospital in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll.

The state-owned MTCC must complete the construction of the 30-bed hospital within one year and five months at a cost of USD8 million. The government has launched an initiative to develop 30-bed hospitals in 15 islands across the Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News, the Manager of the Baa Atoll Hospital Mohamed Rasheed said that a major problem facing the health centre in Thulhaadhoo is the lack of space. He said the problem will be solved with the new hospital.

Thulhaadhoo is the second most populous island in Baa Atoll with more than 3,000 residents. On average, more than 40 individuals visit the OPD building in the Thulhaadhoo Health Centre daily. The health centre is currently operating 24 hours a day with two doctors. The laboratory in the health centre provides all necessary tests. However, samples for non-common tests typically are sent to the Baa Atoll Hospital in Eydhafushi or Male' City.
