MTCC to develop harbours, coastal protection in three islands

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to develop harbours in Buruni, Thaa Atoll, and Fiyoaree, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as well as coastal protection structures in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll.

The agreements were signed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and Shaana Farooq, the Director General at the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

As per the agreements, MTCC is tasked with upgrading the harbour in Buruni within 450 days at a cost of USD3.8 million. The project involves dredging 9,800cbm of the existing harbour and 20,100cbm of the extension, and 8,400cbm of the channel. It also involves building a 308m sand fill breakwater, 181m revetment, and 276m quay wall, as well as installing 35 streetlights and two harbour lights.

Additionally, MTCC will be upgrading the Fiyoaree harbour within 400 days at a cost of USD2.5 million. The project involves dredging 26,750cbm of the harbour and 18,300cbm of the channel. It also involves the development of a 281m revetment, 155m groyne, 166m quay wall, 166m scoring apron, as well as the installation of 10 mooring buoys, four navigation lights, eight street lights, and a 760m pavement.

Furthermore, MTCC will be developing coastal protection structures in Funadhoo within 280 days at a cost of USD1.3 million. The project involves filling the beach with 21,000cbm of sand and building a 670m geobag revetment and a 60m groyne. The island has been severely affected by erosion, which causes tides to reach households during swell wave surges.
