Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will win the upcoming presidential election. He made the remark at a ceremony held in Male’ City to conclude his primary election campaign.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Nasheed assured that he will win the primary election with the help of true MDP supporters. He also made pledges to bring positive changes to the tax system, fisheries sector, and education.
Additionally, Speaker Nasheed criticised the current administration and said that MDP’s policies cannot be implemented by a coalition government, adding that MDP members are skeptical of coalition rule. However, Nasheed won the 2008 election after forming a coalition with other parties. He also highlighted that the Maldives has undergone significant change in its long journey and that he will win the primary election to regain the leadership of MDP.
Speaker Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are contesting in the MDP primary election to be held on January 28. The campaign teams and supporters have been heavily criticising each other’s candidates as they draw near to the election.
