Hanimaadhoo road and harbour to be completed next month

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed the road development and harbour development projects in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, will be completed in February.

Hanimaadhoo is a key island for the economy of the northern atolls. The use of the harbour has increased with the demand for Hanimaadhoo International Airport. At the same time, the economic activity of the island has increased with the relocation of people from two islands to Hanimaadhoo which now has a population of 2,100.

The government awarded the development of the old harbour to MTCC in October 2020. As part of the agreement, MTCC is repairing the old harbour and developing a new 1,200ft harbour.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said the work on the small harbour and the ramp to be installed at the approach of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferries is currently ongoing. The work will be completed by February, he said. The project is estimated to cost USD 3.7 million.

Furthermore, the government also contracted the road development project of Hanimaadhoo to MTCC in May 2019. As part of the project, 20 roads of 7.1km in Hanimaadhoo will be developed to modern standards.
