Utility Regulatory Authority has stated it will take action against resorts that established utility services with unapproved designs.
The Utility Regulatory Authority is the regulatory body tasked with approved designs for water, sewerage, electricity, and waste management services. As such, resorts that open after the end of this month are required to submit the design reports for the establishment of utility services to the authority for approval. Resorts currently in operation are required to submit the design reports of their utility services within six months. The authority will take legal action against resorts that fail to submit the design reports.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established the Utility Regulatory Authority in 2020. The establishment of a Utility Regulatory Authority is mandated under section 3A of the Utility Regulatory Authority Act. The objectives of the Act include providing high quality utility services to all those residing in the Maldives in a more affordable, sustainable and trustworthy manner which is efficient and also environment friendly. Another objective is to establish a penalising mechanism to ensure that special laws and regulations in relation to utility services are adhered to.
