Gulhi land reclamation will begin this year: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that land reclamation projects in Guraidhoo and Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll have been completed with the reclamation in Gulhi scheduled to begin this year. He made the remarks while addressing the campaign rally held for the presidential primary of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Guraidhoo, President Solih noted there are still developmental projects yet to be initiated on the island. He said that islands near Male’ City were ignored by previous governments and that residents have to travel to Male’ for essential services.

Referring to his campaign visits in 2018, President Solih noted the residents of the three islands in the Guraidhoo constituency had expressed that they wanted land reclamation projects to be conducted above all else. As such, he said the administration has conducted land reclamation projects in Guraidhoo and Maafushi and that Maafushi will soon be connected to the newly reclaimed land.

Additionally, President Solih said that the lack of land in Gulhi is a major issue and that reclamation will begin this year. He added that the local councils will use the reclaimed areas in Guraidhoo and Maafushi based on the needs of residents.

Furthermore, President Solih said MDP has always advocated for the equitable provision of services and that the party should maintain the policy despite the difference of opinion by some members. He further said that the administration will assist islands near Male’ to expand its local tourism businesses.
