MDP wins Thakandhoo by-election

The candidate of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won the by-election to appoint a female member to Thakandhoo Island Council in Haa Alifu Atoll.

A total of two candidates contested the election. Fathimath Shaufa from MDP won the seat with 237 votes. Her opponent, who contested as an independent candidate, Faheema Mohamed got 203 votes. A total of 675 people were eligible to vote in the by-election although only 448 people voted which is 66.37% of the voting population.

A by-election was held to elect a female member for the Thakandhoo Island Council after the resignation of Zahiya Ali who was also a member of MDP. The main ruling party holds a majority in the council by holding three of the five seats. The other two councilors are independent members.
