Small island communities should also be developed: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that small island communities should be developed despite some believing that it is a waste of state funds. He made the remarks while addressing a campaign gathering held with members of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Milandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll.

Speaking at the campaign event, President Solih said that questions have been raised over the administration’s decision to conduct developmental projects in small inhabited islands. He, however, said that there was no reason to leave small communities undeveloped, as they are also tax-paying citizens. He assured that his administration will not neglect any island despite its size.

Additionally, President Solih said the administration spent USD15 million on the development of Milandhoo over the past four years. He also provided details on the project to transform the industrial village Nalandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, into a tourist establishment. He said the government will compensate the businesses that have already invested on the island before opening it up for tourism development.

Furthermore, President Solih said that negotiations are underway with businesses operating in Nalandhoo and that tourism investors have expressed interest in the island. He also said that Milandhoo will be a popular spot for tourism by the end of his term and that a running track will also be developed on the island.
