Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed it recorded over 12,000 cases of pink eye in the Maldives in 2022.
Pink eye cases began increasing in August 2022. The statistics from HPA show that the highest number of pink eye cases were reported in the Greater Male’ Region, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Raa Atoll, and Laamu Atoll. A total of 12,555 cases were reported in 2022, which includes 6,169 cases of children under five years old and 6,386 cases of children over five.
HPA stated that 4,723 pink eye cases were reported in Male’, 1,252 cases were reported in Raa Atoll, and 1,194 cases were reported in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Additionally, Laamu Atoll reported 819 cases, Baa Atoll reported 661 cases, and Fuvahmulah City reported 496 cases in 2022. HPA urged the public to be cautious over the increase in cases of pink eye and stated that individuals should get the latest information and take preventive measures.
Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation of the membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. It is most often caused by a viral infection and can also be caused by a bacterial infection or an allergic reaction. The symptoms of pink eye include redness or itchiness in the eyes or a discharge that forms a crust during the night that prevents the eyes from opening in the morning. Individuals showing signs of pink eye should consult a doctor immediately.
Pink eye is contagious and individuals can reduce the risk of contracting pink eye by regularly washing their hands and places where they regularly touch, avoiding touching their eyes, and discarding used tissues.
