Giraavaru land reclamation to be finished by mid-year

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the reclamation of land from Giraavaru in Kaafu Atoll will be completed by the middle of 2023. He made the remarks while speaking at the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary campaign meeting with the residents of Male' City.

In his presidential address at the Parliament of the Maldives in 2022, President Solih announced the government would reclaim land from Giraavaru. He said that 2,000 plots of land will be allocated to the residents of Male'.

Speaking at the meeting with MDP members, President Solih said the government will provide flats and land to the citizens of the city without excluding anyone. He said that are more than 16,000 flats, land, and row house projects ongoing across the country, adding that 7,000 flats and 5,000 land plots will be provided for residents in Male'. He assured that the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is currently evaluating the applications for flats and land and will provide housing without excluding any eligible applicant.

Highlighting the projects being carried out to provide land and flats to the residents of the capital city, President Solih said the reclamation of land from Giraavaru will be completed by the middle of the year. In addition, he revealed plans to reclaim more land from Gulhifalhu in Kaafu Atoll. He also assured the residents of the city that the projects will solve the housing difficulties faced for years.

The government opened the door to investors to reclaim the land in Giraavaru and develop a residential city. The government has set a minimum cost of USD5 million for the project.
