High Commissioner of the Maldives to India Ibrahim Shaheeb said that the government of India is undertaking 25 projects under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) in the Maldives, which will have a direct impact on the public. He made these remarks while speaking in an exclusive interview with India's Wion News.
Speaking on the projects being implemented by India in the Maldives, High Commissioner Shaheeb said that the largest infrastructure development project in the Maldives is being carried out with the assistance of the Government of India. He said that the Greater Male' Connectivity Project will connect Male' City, Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, adding that the project will bring great economic benefits to the Maldives. He also thanked India for providing financial assistance for the project.
Additionally, High Commissioner Shaheeb said that there are currently 25 HICDP projects underway, some of which have already been completed and some that are nearing completion. He said that these projects will directly benefit the public, adding that the public has also accepted these projects. In addition, he said that the HICDPs is an important pillar of the developing relationship between India and the Maldives. He also said that these projects are identified and funded to meet the needs of the public and are implemented under the supervision of local councils and ministries.
Referring to the efforts being made to further strengthen trade relations between India and the Maldives, High Commissioner Shaheeb said that Maldivian cuisine is planned to be introduced to the Indian market. He also noted that this could strengthen trade relations between the two countries in various fields.
Regarding the preparations for the introduction of RuPay Cards in the Maldives, High Commissioner Shaheeb said that the final works are underway. He said that the necessary changes are being made to the rules. He also noted that the card will further strengthen the economic ties and increase the number of tourists traveling between both countries.
Additionally, High Commissioner Shaheeb said that Maldives is a major tourist destination for India. He said that at the end of last year, the largest number of tourists came from India. He also said that he would give special priority to promoting the Maldives as a destination for tourists from all walks of life.
