Over 1,200 tonnes of waste removed from Eydhafushi

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has removed over 1,200 tonnes of waste from Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll, in a span of seven days.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Eydhafushi Island Council Mohamed Fathih said five years of waste had accumulated on the island, and the council spent USD39,000 from its budget to remove it. The council noted that a large amount of discarded metal is still present but preparations are being made to remove them with assistance from nearby resorts.

Eydhafushi Island Council collects waste from households for a USD6.49 fee, and nine workers are currently employed for the work. The council will begin segregating waste as its waste management capacity increases. The council expects its waste management centre to be developed to an adequate level this year.
