Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has denied reports that a study has been conducted to connect the electricity grid between the Maldives and India. The ministry made the statement following reports from some media outlets citing Indian news agencies that studies have been conducted on connecting the electricity grid between Maldives and India.

The environment ministry said that various countries and companies around the world are always publicising findings on new technology and efficient ways of generating electricity and submitting proposals for their implementation. As such, the ministry noted various parties have always made various proposals to the Maldives in connection with such issues. However, the ministry said that the Maldives has not yet signed for such a project as claimed in some media reports on the Maldives-India power grid connection.

The ministry further revealed that Maldives is always striving to utilise available renewable energy resources to reduce dependence on oil in the generation and supply of electricity and enhance its energy efficiency. The ministry has assured that the Maldives will continue to work as such in the future.
