Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed that the number of family members who can meet inmates in police custody has been increased.
According to the previous regulations of in custodial prisons, only people such as parents, spouses, siblings aunts and uncles, as well as children can meet inmates in police custody. According to this rule, prisoners can only attend their funerals. However, with the change in the regulations, sisters and brothers, siblings, half siblings and their children have been added to the list of visitors. In addition, stepchildren, step-grandparents and legal guardians are also included.
The prevalence of crime in Maldivian prisons and the fact that prisoners commit more serious crimes when serving time in the prisons is the biggest concern in society. Therefore, the government is working to reshape prisons as places for rehabilitation.
