Waste management centres to be built in three islands

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology has contracted Lyco Construction Company Private Limited to build waste management centres in Mulah in Meemu Atoll, Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atoll, and Dhanbidhoo in Laamu Atoll.

The contract was signed by Deputy Minister Mohamed Ansar and Project Manager of Lyco Construction Ali Rameez. The contract was signed under the ministry’s Clean Environment Project, which is funded by a grant from the World Bank. Lyco Construction is tasked with completing the development of the waste management centres within six months at a cost of USD747,000.

The ministry stated that the waste management centres will solve the issue of waste accumulating in the islands and will also allow the waste management centre in Dhiggaru, Meemu Atoll, to be upgraded to a regional waste management centre. It also stated that the development of modern waste management centres will benefit public health and the environment.

The waste management centres will be built with office space, restrooms, storage areas, and special areas for sorted and hazardous waste. Weighing scales will also be placed at the centres.
