The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has formed a five-member committee to organise and oversee the primary election held within the party to determine a presidential candidate for the ruling MDP in the upcoming presidential election.
A five-member committee must be elected by the National Congress to organise and manage the election, as per the MDP Constitution. The five members were elected at the National Congress held in Thaajuddin School.
The election of members to the committee went through heated debate at the meeting of the National Congress. The nomination process for the five-member election committee was opened which included lists submitted by supporters of the two candidates and motions to vote on the names separately. The committee includes Ibrahim Waheed, Anas Abdul Sattar, Akram Kamaluddin, Mohamed Eman, and Ahmed Abdulla Afeef.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed are contesting in the MDP primary election to be held on January 28.
