Male’ City Council takes over street cleaning

Male’ City Council has taken over the responsibility to clean the streets and public spaces in the Greater Male’ Region.

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) was tasked with cleaning the streets and public spaces in Male’ in the past five years. However, Male’ City Council has stated that it will not renew the contract with WAMCO, which expired on December 25, and will instead directly handle the responsibility. The city council cited the high cost of the service as the reason for the decision, stating that USD161,000 is spent every month on WAMCO street cleaning service and that the work would cost USD98,000 if done by the city council.

Furthermore, WAMCO stated in a recent press release that it will no longer be involved in any activity related to cleaning the streets and public spaces in Male’. Under the contract, the company provided services such as cleaning the streets, parks, and other public spaces, as well as collecting and eliminating waste in these areas. A total of 178 employees of WAMCO were involved in cleaning the streets of Male’, 90% of whom were women.
