Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have held a seminar on maritime law enforcement.
Around 30 officials joined the seminar held from December 21-22 in Hulhumale’. They were 15 officers of the MNDF and 15 officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The speakers of the seminar consisted of experienced members of ICRC who spoke on Maritime Security Operations, International Rules of Standards for the Exercise of Maritime Law Enforcement Power.
During the seminar, participants were provided information on the perspectives on maritime security operations, ICRC’s role and mandate, the protection and dignified management of the dead at sea, principles governing the exercise of law enforcement officers’ power, and the use of force and firearms at sea.
The ICRC is an independent, neutral organisation ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law. The work of the ICRC is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949, their Additional Protocols, its Statutes, and those of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the resolutions of the International Conferences of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
