The President’s office has revealed that the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has begun taking action over the findings of the final report on the enforced disappearance of Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.

The Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances presented the report to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on December 15. Afterwards, the commission members stated that the government will take action over the latest findings on Rilwan’s case.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson at the President’s Office Miuvaan Mohamed said that the case has many aspects related to national security and as such, the government is unable to provide details on the recommendations proposed in the report. He assured that President Solih places a high priority in concluding the case and has held discussions regarding the recommendations with the AGO. He added that three suspects have already been charged over the case and that efforts will be made to submit the relevant documents to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) regarding the latest findings.

Ahmed Rilwan disappeared on August 7, 2014. The Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances has revealed the motive behind the incident. The commission highlighted the social, political, and religious upheaval during that time which had led to the increase in influence of religious extremists and criminal gangs. The commission stated that Rilwan was targeted by extremists and that the assailants had kidnapped and killed Rilwan and sank his body into the ocean. The commission also released information on the six individuals that had allegedly been on the boat during the incident. The commission further stated that Rilwan’s kidnapping and murder was planned and that the government had attempted to hide the facts behind the case by claiming that he had fled the country and died in Syria.
