STELCO says its future is renewable energy

State Electric Company (STELCO) has stated that it aims to transform 30-40% of its electricity generation in the Greater Male’ Region to renewable energy by 2025. Managing Director Ahmed Shareef made the statement at the ceremony to celebrate 73 years of providing electricity service in the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Shareef highlighted the need to implement environmentally-friendly methods of electricity generation, noting that a waste-to-energy project has begun in Thilafushi. He said STELCO will purchase 10MW of the electricity generated from the project and connect it to the grid.

Additionally, Shareef said that STELCO will have the capacity to provide electricity generated by renewable energy to the islands and resorts near Male’ by 2024. He added that the company is already in the final stages of generating 150MW of renewable energy from an uninhabited island near Male’.
