Dunya Maumoon appears before ACC on charges of MMPRC scandal

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has been summoned by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) as part of the investigation of the corruption scandal of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The investigation of the MMPRC scandal is one of the highest priorities of the ACC. The commission scheduled the appearance of Dunya for the investigation into a case involving her. The Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery has also conducted an investigation and shared a report with the public.

ACC ordered Dunya to appear in the past. However, her lawyer appeared before the ACC on behalf of her. ACC stated that former ministers and former parliamentarians have been summoned and questioned in the past. ACC is investigating a number of cases related to the MMPRC investigation and is working to send these cases to prosecution as soon as possible. The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) is still in discussions to decide whether to investigate some cases.

The MMPRC corruption scandal involves the largest embezzlement of state funds in the history of the Maldives, with investigations suggesting that the total amount embezzled is over USD220 million. The Parliament publicised a list of 281 beneficiaries of the corruption scandal, including 119 state officials, and 16 parliamentarians.

Former President Abdulla Yameen, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, and former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath were convicted over their involvement in the scandal. Although the sentence on Yameen was cleared by the Supreme Court of the Maldives, the PGO has raised more corruption charges against him.
