MTCC completes construction of breakwater in Dharavandhoo

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the construction of the breakwater as part of the shore protection project in Dhavandhoo, Baa Atoll.

MTCC stated the project is 77% complete and the fourth shipment of rock boulders have been delivered to the site. The shore protection project was contracted to MTCC to provide a solution for the problem of erosion faced by Dharavandhoo. The fieldwork of the project began on May 28. The scope of works include 10,800cbm of beach filling, construction of a 490m breakwater and a 96m revetment. The project is worth USD1.4 million.

Dharavandhoo Island Council has estimated that the project will be completed in January. The island’s beach has been affected by erosion, which has negatively impacted the island’s tourism businesses. Many large trees on the shoreline have also fallen due to erosion in the past four years.
