The Ombudsperson's Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) has revealed it is making efforts to complete the investigation of the cases by the middle of 2023.
OTJ was established following the ratification of the Transitional Justice Act on December 17, 2020. It functions as an autonomous legal identity vested with powers to communicate, file a lawsuit or receive court charges under the Transitional Justice Act which sanctions investigations into past wrongdoings by state authorities, heads of agencies, or individuals in power, which resulted in human rights violations. A total of 489 cases were submitted to the office during the three-month period that opened on June 13, 2021. However, OTJ decided to hear 455 cases and of these, 111 cases have been investigated so far.
OTJ stated that the final report on the eviction of the individuals from Thinadho, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, will be completed within December and aims to complete the investigation of all cases by the middle of next year. OTJ also said it is investigating seven cases of national interest.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended the term of the OTJ to complete the cases it is investigating until November 17, 2023.
