Maldives elected as Vice President of UNHRC

The Maldives has been elected by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to serve as a Vice-President for the year 2023 starting from January 1.

UNHRC announced the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva, Switzerland Dr. Asim Ahmed is one of four vice-presidents elected by the council for next year.

Speaking about the achievement, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid revealed the appointment is a result of the strong foreign policy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He expressed hope to forge a firm leadership at UNHRC Bureau to ensure the momentum built over the years to globally uphold human rights remains stronger than ever.

UNHRC also elected the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN in Geneva Václav Bálek as its President. Ambassadors Maira Mariela Macdonal Alvarez of Bolivia, Muhammadou M.O. Kah of the Gambia, and Marc Bichler of Luxembourg were also elected as Vice Presidents of the council.

The 47 members of the UNHRC not only reflect the United Nation’s diversity, but it gives the council legitimacy when speaking out on human rights violations in all countries.
