Speaker of Parliament of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has been elected as the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Democratic Union (APDU).
The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) congratulated Speaker Nasheed on his election. Nasheed is the President of MDP, which is the only Maldivian political party representing the Maldives at the APDU. It was the first time a Maldivian member has been elected as chairman of the union. Former Chairperson of MDP Hassan Latheef had previously served as the Vice Chairman of APDU.
The APDU is an international regional association of member parties, associated with the International Democrat Union. It aims to promote freedom and free enterprise by considering matters of political organization and policy of interest to member parties. Regional members of APDU include India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickramasinghe’s United National Party.
