Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched a special operation in Maafushi Prison against crimes committed to extort money from the public and facilitate acts of terrorism.
The operation is being conducted in collaboration with the MPS, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS). The police were requested by MCS to search the Maafushi Prison following information received about scam calls and acts facilitating terrorism.
The government said that the most frequent sources of fraudulent information and money laundering scam calls are from prisons. The government expressed concern over the matter and has launched a joint effort against scam calls and fraudulent extortion.
