MPS holds briefing session on Chagos Islands dispute

A briefing session has been held for officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) on the Chagos Islands dispute.

The session was conducted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and Attorney General (AG) Ibrahim Riffath. The session was held following the decision of the National Security Council to brief the MPS on the ongoing dispute concerning the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Maldives and Mauritius.

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed, senior officials from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Attorney General's Office (AGO) also attended the session.

The Government of the Maldives has informed Mauritius that it would not give any leeway in the maritime boundary dispute, even if the Maldives sides with Mauritius for the decolonisation of the Chagos Islands. It stated that its decision to vote in favour of Mauritius receiving control of the Chagos Islands does not mean the Maldives would reverse its stand in the maritime boundary dispute.
