Authorities must prevent prisons becoming opportune for crime: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has expressed concern that prisons in the Maldives are facilitating opportunities for many crimes. He expressed the concern at the opening ceremony of the workshop held for institutions to come together to discuss the increasing number of cases of people being defrauded by scams.

Speaking at the ceremony, Home Minister Imran said the number of inmates involved in crimes is increasing. The minister also said inmates have now identified means to depict noises of different natural environments to convince the people during scam calls. He added it is a challenge to stop such acts of crime.

Therefore, Minister Imran called for full cooperation between the agencies and the public to work together to overcome these issues. He stated one of the most important things to do in the fight against crime is to treat the case submitted by one institution as a serious case and provide assistance and cooperation to solve the case.

The prevalence of crime in Maldivian prisons and the fact that prisoners commit more serious crimes when serving time in the prisons is the biggest concern in society. Therefore, the government is working to reshape prisons as places for rehabilitation.
