Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed that fish exports have recorded a 2% increase compared to the same period last year.
As per the Quarterly Economic Bulletin report published by MMA, the Maldives exported 19,400 metric tonnes of fish in the third quarter of this year which is a 2% increase compared to the third quarter of 2021. The increase in fish exports was primarily due to the increase in exports of frozen yellowfin tuna and frozen skipjack tuna. The country exported 6,510 metric tonnes of frozen yellowfin tuna and 4,423 metric tonnes of frozen skipjack tuna during the same period. The country exported 1,343 metric tonnes of fresh yellowfin tuna in the third quarter, according to the report,
Meanwhile, to the report, fish purchases made by processing companies declined in the third quarter of this year. Companies purchased 14,500 metric tonnes of fish in the third quarter of this year which is a 19% decrease compared to the third quarter of last year. MMA said it was due to the 53% decline in yellowfin tuna purchases during the period and a 5% decline in skipjack tuna purchases.
