Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has urged sea travellers to be aware of a large amount of waste floating near Thilafushi in Kaafu Atoll.
WAMCO said that a large amount of garbage is accumulating in the innermost part of the lagoon. WAMCO said the direction of the flow has changed and the waste is circulating in the lagoon and discharged into the sea due to the change in the Thilafushi lagoon water current system these days. The company said the WAMCO team is working to clean up the waste to reduce the possibility of it dispersing into the sea.
WAMCO said the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the Japan Fund for Joint Credit Mechanism (JFJCM) are working together to establish a modern waste management system in Thilafushi. The rehabilitation of the existing waste in the lagoon is also being carried out with the assistance of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
