The Parliament of the Maldives has gone to recess after completing 54.7% of the work during the last session of the year.
The Parliament held 43 sittings and logged in 152 hours during the last session. The most important task was approving the USD3 billion state budget for 2023, and passing the amendment bills to the Decentralisation Act and the Fisheries Act.
The Parliament also passed the amendment bill to increase taxes in January 2023 and hold by-elections for women’s development committees (WDCs) once a year. In total, the Parliament concluded deliberations on 25 out of 42 bills and six out of 17 resolutions.
During the third session, the Parliament concluded deliberations on 10 of the 11 government-proposed bills and motions, three out of eight bills and motions proposed by parliamentarians, nine emergency motions, and five out of 10 reports. The Parliament also received answers to 43 of the 89 questions submitted to cabinet ministers. In conclusion, the Parliament completed 54.7% of the work during the third session.
The Parliament will reconvene in February 2023 after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih gives his presidential address.
