Gov't warns extremists are planning terror attacks tirelessly

Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has warned that extremists are always working tirelessly to plan and carry out dangerous terrorist attacks. She made the statement at the ceremony to mark the 29th anniversary of the Southern Area Command of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) held in Addu City.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mariya highlighted the spread of extremist ideology in the Maldives and the involvement of extremists in planning terrorist attacks. She also highlighted the recent counter-terrorism operation conducted by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the MNDF in Addu and Male' City, in which 14 individuals were arrested. She added that they were trying to carry out a powerful explosion and said the planned attack could have cost many lives. She said the operation was one of the most dangerous plots ever foiled. She noted the government is working to prevent the spread of extremism, adding there are individuals who are spreading such menaces and planning to harm the public and properties.

Additionally, Minister Mariya said that in a small country with a fragile economy that relies on tourism, such an attack would cause damage that would last for many years. She noted that such issues need to be worked hard against to be prevented in the future. She also said that extremists are spreading their propaganda on information domains. She said that revolutionary changes in technology and social media have increased the opportunities for dangerous people to conduct harmful activities, adding that MNDF should adapt to the changing society.

In conclusion, Minister Mariya said it is necessary to keep an eye on such plans within the regions of the area commands, learn about them, and shape actions based on them.
