Financial assistance provided to victims of Male’ City fire incident

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that financial assistance has been provided to the victims of the fire incident that occurred in Male’ City on November 10, and none of them are now in temporary shelters.

NDMA has completed its assessment of damages caused by the fire with assistance from the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure. The authority is now formulating the report.

NDMA assisted the 29 victims from six households in the affected area, which were 15 Maldivians and 14 foreigners. The victims included six children and accommodation arrangements were made at five guesthouses.

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and the Maldivian Red Crescent are providing mental health treatment for the victims. Some of the residents living in the affected households are now living with their family and friends. The relevant authorities are closely monitoring their situation and providing assistance.

The fire incident caused 10 deaths. Eight of the deceased victims were Indian nationals, which are three women and five men. The other two deaths were of a Bangladeshi woman and a man. The fire that broke out in Nirufehi caused severe damage to the building and the authorities are working to demolish the building. It is the deadliest fire incident to occur in the Maldives.
