Fieldwork in progress to develop Ameenee Magu second segment

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has revealed that the fieldwork is progressing for the development of the second segment of Ameenee Magu in Male' City.

RDC stated that it is working on the modernisation of Ameenee Magu in various segments. The first segment is now complete and the fieldwork for the second segment is making progress as planned. It will be constructed on 136m of the road between Irudheymaa Hingun and Kalaafaanu Hingun. RDC stated the segments will be opened for vehicular traffic once the asphalt has been laid on the road. The asphalt laying of the first segment will start after the completion of the areas up to Billabong High International School.

Meanwhile, the work on the second segment has faced difficulties due to the upgradation of the water and sewerage service network in the area by Malé Water and Sewerage Company. In addition, RDC said it is waiting for the arrival of material to be used in the second segment. Therefore, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has requested RDC to suspend the work of Ameenee Magu until sufficient resources are provided to continue the project.

Previously, RDC has noted that Ameenee Magu holds a number of main cables of water and sewerage pipes as well as other networks of the capital city. The biggest issue the company has pointed out is that Ameenee Magu does not have adequate drawings to show the depth of the road. As a result, RDC has been facing challenges since the first day of excavation. The company stated the water level of the road is shallow and the depth of the road does not match the data collected regarding the water and sewerage networks.

The development of Ameenee Magu, one of the main roads connecting all the neighborhoods of the city, will be carried out in 13 segments. The contract for the redevelopment of Ameenee Magu was signed between RDC and the planning ministry on July 3. The project involves paving the whole 1.7km length of Ameenee Magu with asphalt and installing a new stormwater drainage system. The project was contracted to RDC at a price of USD5.5 million. The duration of the project is seven months.
