Haa Alifu Atoll Council has decided to provide financial assistance to seven islands in the atoll.
The atoll council announced it will distribute USD6,500 to each island as aid this year. The council also said that the seven islands will be determined after considering the proposals submitted by the islands. The opportunity has been opened for all island councils, women's development committees (WDCs), clubs, associations, and government agencies in the islands to submit proposals for social development projects. The proposal will be open until November 27.
Under the Decentralisation Act, island councils and atoll councils have the authority to implement various development projects within their jurisdiction. The councils also have the power to manage the projects in a way that benefits them.
