The Special Envoy to the government of the Maldives Abbas Faiz has met the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee.
Abbas Faiz was appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to monitor the investigation, prosecution, and trial of the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021. Part of the discussions he held with the Judiciary Committee regarding the attack was made secret for national security reasons.
During the part of the meeting that was held publicly, Special Envoy Faiz noted the long length of the trial and said he had met with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to request that the case be expedited. He added that quickly concluding such cases would be a huge point of progress for the country’s judiciary. Following the meeting, the committee decided to request the JSC for a detailed timeline of the case.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested a total of nine suspects in relation to the May 6 attack. The prime suspect of the attack, Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, was sentenced to 23 years in prison after he was found guilty of detonating the improvised explosive device (IED) by remote in an attempt to assassinate Speaker Nasheed. The trials of the remaining suspects are still ongoing.
