The Parliament of the Maldives has opened the proposed state budget for 2023 for parliamentarians to propose amendments.
Parliamentarians have been given three days to propose amendments, after which they will debate the proposed state budget with the amendments. The parliamentarians will then be given seven minutes each to debate the committee’s report on the budget. The government proposed a USD3 billion state budget for 2023 to the Parliament. The budget was evaluated by the Parliamentary Budget Committee, which was formed by combining the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs and the Parliamentary Committee on Finance.
The committee approved the USD3 billion budget with an increase of USD10 million. The main changes in the budget include development projects in some sectors and changes in the budget of independent institutions. The budget is expected to be passed by the Parliament on November 30.
During the presentation of the budget to the Parliament, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer said the main objective of next year's budget is to fulfill the pledges made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the public. He said the project will facilitate the resolution of many basic issues that have not been resolved for a long time and improve the quality of services needed by the public.
