Criminals deemed untouchable have been arrested: MPS

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that criminals involved in unsolved murders, who were deemed untouchable due to their political influence, have been arrested.

Speaking at a press conference, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said MPS takes a special priority in investigating unsolved murders and that significant progress has been made in the cases of murder and disappearance by obtaining evidence against those involved. As such, he said that three suspects who were suspected to have been the most involved in the murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan have been arrested.

The suspects are Ismail Abdul Raheem Adam, Ahmed Ismail, and Ahmed Muaz. Their involvement in the murder of Rilwan was also highlighted in the 2019 report formulated by the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.

Commissioner Hameed said they were arrested after gathering the necessary evidence and that MPS is obtaining new findings in the case as it continues its investigation in a thorough manner. He noted that senior officials from the relevant authorities are involved in the case, as well as experts in crime investigation, data analysis, and interrogations.
