President meets authorities at scene of fire incident

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met with the relevant authorities at the scene of the fire incident that occurred at Maafannu Nirufehige in Male' City on the morning of November 10, which caused the death of 10 individuals. The incident is the most deadly fire incident to occur in the Maldives.

President Solih met with the relevant authorities at the scene with Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla. The president expressed grief over the fire and said he is holding all relevant discussions with the authorities to prevent further incidents.

Fire incidents that occur in Male’ threaten to become major incidents due to congestion and the large number of garages and warehouses in the city. President Solih highlighted the fire incident that occurred in 2019 at a chemical warehouse and said the government responded by removing all chemical warehouses from residential areas. He said the government also plans to move garages and workshops to Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu and that the issue of congestion needs to be solved immediately after holding discussions with the relevant authorities.

Additionally, President Solih thanked Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for its quick response, as officials were at the scene within three minutes of the incident being reported. He said the officials had controlled the fire and prevented it from affecting nearby buildings.
