National Disaster Management Authority of Maldives (NDMA) has revealed that assistance has been provided to 58 people so far following the fire incident in Male' City that resulted in 10 deaths. The incident is the most deadly fire incident to occur in the Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference on the fire that broke out at a vehicle repair garage in Maafannu Nirufehige, Chief Executive Officer Hisan Hussain said NDMA teams have been dispatched to various areas, adding Maafannu Stadium is being used as the evacuation site and the Jamaluddin School hall has been prepared as a backup location. In addition, he said a total of 58 victims which consist of 30 locals belonging to four families and 28 foreigners have been treated at the scene of the incident.
Furthermore, Hisan stated that the NDMA is currently working to relocate the victims to temporary shelters after completing investigations. He said they will be relocated to guesthouses, adding that NDMA is providing necessary assistance to the victims under their care. In addition to providing food and clothing, psychosocial support is also being provided in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and other relevant agencies.
