Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has submitted charges against the President of Hanimaadhoo Island Council Abdul Sattar Hassan and two others for leasing the land plot at the island’s harbour against regulations.
ACC requested the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to charge Abdul Sattar Hassan, Mohamed Raazee, and Hassan Jaufar for violating regulations in the lease of the land plot at the Hanimaadhoo harbour for hotel operations, businesses, and fuel services in 2016. The commission stated that the land plot was opened for bidding prior to leasing it to a private party while 128sqft of the land plot was leased without making an announcement, which is in violation of the regulations on the use of state-owned land plots under the jurisdiction of local councils.
ACC requested the PGO to charge the three individuals with corruption for leasing the land plot for a 15-year period without authorisation. The commission also ordered the Hanimaadhoo Island Council to recover the USD1,944 in lease payments and USD384 in late fees from the private party.
